12 Months of Early Childhood Educator Meetings 
​The plan outlines a year of professional development meetings for early childhood educators, with each month focused on a specific theme. These include topics like outdoor learning, mental health for educators, play-based learning, effective documentation, and promoting social and emotional development in children. Each session includes content for learning, practical activities (such as workshops or team discussions), and reflection questions to foster robust team discussions. The goal is to support educators’ growth, improve teaching practices, and strengthen connections with children and families. Each month is linked to the Early Years Learning Framework, the National Quality Framework with 10 reflection questions to support your team.
January: New Year, New Goals – Setting Intentions for the Year Ahead
Focus: Goal setting, reflection, and planning for the upcoming year. Content:
Reflect on the previous year’s achievements and challenges.
Set professional development goals based on the EYLF outcomes.
Discuss personal and professional growth plans for the year.
Activity:
Set both short-term and long-term goals related to the classroom and individual development.
Create vision boards or action plans for 2026.

February: Building Strong Relationships – Connection with Children and Families
Focus: Strengthening relationships with children and their families.
Content:
The importance of family engagement in the early years.
Building trust and positive relationships with children.
Strategies for effective communication with families.
Activity:
Role-playing educator-teacher conversations.
Brainstorm ideas for increasing family involvement and engagement.

March: Inclusion and Diversity – Celebrating Cultural Awareness
Focus: Embracing and celebrating diversity in the early childhood setting.
Content:
Understanding the role of cultural competence in early education.
Strategies for promoting inclusion for all children, including those with disabilities or from diverse cultural backgrounds.
How to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into the curriculum.
Activity:
Plan a cultural celebration or event for the children in the center.
Group discussion on culturally inclusive practices and activities 

April: Encouraging Language and Literacy in the Early Years
Focus: Fostering strong language, communication, and early literacy skills.
Content: 
The role of language development in early childhood learning and its link to later academic success.
Creating language-rich environments to support vocabulary, storytelling, and expression. Strategies for supporting both verbal and non-verbal communicators, including multilingual children and those with speech delays. Using books, songs, rhymes, and everyday conversations as tools for language development.
Activity:
Set up a “literacy corner” or storytelling area with books, puppets, and visual prompts.
Plan a group literacy activity such as story mapping, bookmaking with the children, or a storytelling picnic.
Share favorite children’s books and brainstorm how to extend them into other learning areas (e.g., art, sensory, dramatic play).

April Engaging Families in Children’s Learning
Focus: Building family partnerships.
Content: Ways to involve families and strategies for supporting them.
Activity: Plan a family engagement event and share tips on fostering family partnerships.

May: Outdoor Learning and Nature Play in Early Childhood Education
Focus: Exploring the benefits of outdoor learning and nature play for children’s development.
Content:
The importance of outdoor learning for physical, social, and cognitive development.
How to create a stimulating outdoor environment for children.
Incorporating natural elements into the curriculum (e.g., sand, water, plants, animals).
Activity:
Plan a nature-based activity or excursion for the children, such as a nature walk or setting up a garden project.
Share ideas for incorporating environmental education into daily routines.

June: Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing for Educators
Focus: Supporting the mental health and wellbeing of educators.
Content:
Understanding the impact of stress and burnout in early childhood education.
Strategies for educator self-care and resilience building.
How to create a positive and supportive workplace culture.
Activity:
Group discussion on self-care practices.
Develop a team wellbeing action plan.

July: Play-Based Learning – Maximising Learning Through Play
Focus: The role of play in early childhood education and development.
Content:
The benefits of play-based learning in the EYLF framework.
Creating environments that foster creative, cognitive, and social development.
Strategies for observation and documentation in play-based settings.
Activity:
Hands-on play-based activity demonstrations (e.g., sensory play, dramatic play setups).
Review of recent child observations and reflections on play-based experiences.

August: Effective Documentation and Assessment in Early Childhood
Focus: Enhancing documentation and assessment practices.
Content:
The importance of documenting children's learning and development.
Methods of observation, record-keeping, and assessment in line with the EYLF.
Using documentation to inform planning and program development.
Activity:
Practice writing effective observations and learning stories.
Review a case study of a child’s progress and design an assessment plan.

September: Professional Collaboration and Teamwork
Focus: Strengthening teamwork and collaboration among educators.
Content:
Effective communication techniques for team collaboration.
Conflict resolution and maintaining professional relationships.
Team planning and reflection for continuous improvement.
Activity:
Team-building exercises to improve communication and problem-solving.
Group discussion on how to enhance teamwork and support each other professionally.

October: Supporting Children’s Social and Emotional Development
Focus: Promoting emotional intelligence and social skills in children.
Content:
Strategies for fostering emotional regulation and empathy in children.
Recognizing and supporting children’s emotional needs.
Using stories and activities to teach social skills and conflict resolution.
Activity:
Plan activities and games that support emotional regulation (e.g., emotion charades, breathing exercises).
Share success stories of children’s emotional growth and development.

November: Reflecting on and Documenting Progress – End of Year Reflection
Focus: Reflecting on the year’s work and documenting children’s development.
Content:
Reviewing and reflecting on the year's curriculum and children’s progress.
Strategies for documenting and sharing progress with families.
Identifying areas for professional growth in the upcoming year.
Activity:
Collaborate on compiling end-of-year reports for children.
Discuss highlights and challenges from the year and set goals for improvement.

December: Celebrating Successes and Planning for the Future
Focus: Reflecting on the year, celebrating achievements, and planning for the next year.
Content:
Acknowledging the successes of the year.
Setting individual and team goals for the coming year.
Practicing gratitude and reflection to maintain motivation for the future.
Activity:
Share success stories and thank-you notes within the team.
Team brainstorming session to prepare for next year’s professional development goals.

Team Reflection and Discussion Questions:
For each meeting, 10 reflection questions are sent. Examples include:
  1. January: What are your professional development goals for this year? How can we support each other in achieving these goals?
  2. February: What activities have you found most successful in building strong relationships with families? How can we encourage more family involvement in the upcoming year?
  3. March: How do we currently address diversity in our curriculum? What new strategies can we implement to create a more inclusive environment for all children?
  4. April: How do I build genuine, respectful partnerships with families, and what can I do to ensure they feel heard, valued, and included in our learning community?
  5. ​May: How can we ensure outdoor learning aligns with our curriculum goals? What are the barriers we face when incorporating nature play, and how can we overcome them?
  6. June: How do we currently manage stress in our workplace? What are some practices we can introduce to promote educator well-being regularly?
  7. July: Which play-based learning activities have been most effective in your classroom? How can we incorporate more sensory play into our daily routines?
  8. August: What has been the most challenging part of documentation for you? How can we improve our assessment process to better reflect children’s progress?
  9. September: What are the key challenges you face when collaborating with colleagues? How can we strengthen our team communication and resolve conflicts more effectively?
  10. October: What strategies have you found successful in helping children regulate their emotions? How can we better support children who struggle with emotional development?
  11. November: What do you feel most proud of this year in terms of student progress? How can we use our reflections to improve our teaching practices for the upcoming year?
  12. December: What were some of the biggest successes in your classroom this year? How can we maintain this momentum in the new year?
This approach gives educators a structured framework to reflect on their practices, share ideas, and create plans for improvement. The balance between content learning and team reflection will be valuable for enhancing their teaching and the overall learning environment.
