Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, educators will be able to:
- Define active supervision and identify its six key strategies.
- Understand how environmental design supports supervision and safety.
- Create intentional provocations that encourage exploration and learning.
- Balance freedom and safety in outdoor and indoor play spaces.
- Reflect critically on supervision practices using the NQF, EYLF, and service philosophy.
- Design and document evidence of active supervision and environment planning for Assessment & Rating.
Linked Quality Areas
- QA2 – Children’s Health and Safety
2.2.1 Supervision is active, vigilant, and purposeful. - QA3 – Physical Environment
3.2.1 Inclusive, engaging environments that support participation and learning. - QA5 – Relationships with Children
5.1.1 Responsive, respectful interactions foster trust and engagement.
EYLF Practice Alignment
- Holistic approach
- Learning environments
- Intentional teaching
- Assessment for learning
- Responsiveness to children
Course Modules
Module 1 – What is Active Supervision?
- Definition and purpose.
- The six elements of active supervision:
- Positioning
- Scanning
- Listening
- Anticipating
- Engaging
- Evaluating
- Responding vs reacting: proactive risk prevention.
- Case study reflections.
Module 2 – Designing for Visibility and Flow
- How layout impacts supervision and engagement.
- Creating “lines of sight” indoors and outdoors.
- Strategic placement of resources, shade, and boundaries.
- Balancing busy and calm zones.
- Red flags in yard setups and how to redesign for safety and engagement.
Module 3 – Provocations and Purposeful Setups
- What makes a setup a provocation (vs just an activity).
- Designing provocations that are:
- Open-ended
- Sensory-rich
- Culturally responsive
- Connected to EYLF outcomes
- How provocations support self-regulation and focus (reducing unsafe behaviours).
- Examples:
- Mud kitchen chemistry corner
- Construction site inquiry
- Nature weaving under the trees
- Mini art atelier in the yard
Module 4 – Supervision in Action: Scenarios & Role-Play
- Managing transitions (arrival, mealtimes, rest, outdoor play).
- Team communication strategies (“hot spots,” hand signals, shared cues).
- Inclusion and supervision — supporting children with diverse needs.
- Reflective scenarios:
- “What would you do if…” safety dilemmas.
Module 5 – Documentation & Reflection
- Recording supervision plans and environment layouts.
- Using floor plans, photos, and annotations to show intentional practice.
- Reflective questions:
- How do our environments reflect children’s voices?
- What patterns of play do we notice — and how can we support them safely?
- Critical reflection tool: “From Watchful to Purposeful – How Do We Supervise with Intention?”
Included Course Resources
- Active Supervision Checklist
- Yard/Indoor Setup Planner
- Provocation Design Template
- Reflection Journal
- Assessment & Rating Evidence Guide
Critical Reflection Questions
- How does our supervision style influence children’s independence?
- What does being present look like in our daily practice?
- How can provocations reduce behaviour challenges and safety risks?
- How do we ensure all educators share the same understanding of active supervision?
- How do we document and show our intentionality to assessors?
Course Completion
Participants receive a Certificate of Professional Learning demonstrating alignment with:
- NQS QA2, QA3, QA5
- EYLF Learning Environments & Intentional Teaching Practices
