Winter Wellbeing for Early Childhood Educators

Course Title: Winter Wellbeing for Early Childhood EducatorsDuration: 2 hours
Learning Objectives: By the end of this course, early childhood educators will:
  1. Understand the impact of winter on mental and physical health.
  2. Explore strategies for maintaining mental health during winter.
  3. Learn ways to stay physically active and nourished during colder months.
  4. Understand self-care techniques to support work-life balance in winter.

Module 1: Understanding Winter’s Impact on Wellbeing (20 minutes)Objective: To provide an understanding of the physical and mental effects of winter.
  • Discussion Points:
    1. The Winter Blues: The impact of reduced sunlight and colder temperatures on mood, including Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
    2. Physical Health in Winter: How cold weather can lead to fatigue, muscle stiffness, and the increased likelihood of colds and flu.
    3. Workplace Stress: Higher workload during the winter months, due to increased illness, can be overwhelming for educators.
  • Activity: Poll/Reflection (5 minutes)
    • Poll question: "How do you usually feel during the winter months—more energized or more fatigued?"
    • Participants can share how the winter season affects them personally and professionally.
  • Content Delivery (15 minutes):
    • Brief educational video or slides explaining the science behind winter-related mood changes and physical fatigue.

Module 2: Strategies for Maintaining Mental Health in Winter (30 minutes)Objective: To explore practical strategies for looking after mental health during the colder months.
  • Discussion Points:
    1. Creating a Supportive Work Environment: Tips for educators to foster positivity in the classroom, despite the cold season.
    2. Mindfulness & Meditation: Short mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and improve focus.
    3. Social Support: Importance of socializing with peers to combat isolation that can happen during winter.
  • Activity: Mindfulness Exercise (10 minutes)
    • Body Scan Meditation: A brief guided meditation to help participants relax and refocus.
  • Interactive Task: Winter Wellness Action Plan (10 minutes)
    • Participants will write down 3 mental health strategies they will implement during the winter months (e.g., daily gratitude journaling, short mindfulness breaks, or engaging in weekly team check-ins).

Module 3: Staying Active & Nourished in Winter (30 minutes)Objective: To learn ways to maintain physical activity and nourish the body during winter.
  • Discussion Points:
    1. Importance of Physical Activity: The benefits of staying active in winter, even with shorter daylight hours.
    2. Indoor Exercise Ideas: Simple activities like stretching, yoga, or online workout classes for indoors.
    3. Nutrition for Energy: Foods that boost energy and immune systems in colder months, focusing on warming meals and staying hydrated.
  • Activity: Quick Indoor Movement Routine (10 minutes)
    • Participants follow along with a brief 5-minute indoor stretching/yoga routine to demonstrate how they can fit movement into their daily routine, even when stuck indoors.
  • Interactive Task: Winter Nutrition Challenge (10 minutes)
    • Ask participants to write down 2-3 winter-friendly, healthy meals/snacks that they plan to incorporate into their routines to boost energy and immunity.

Module 4: Self-Care and Work-Life Balance (40 minutes)Objective: To learn the importance of self-care and work-life balance during winter.
  • Discussion Points:
    1. Recognizing Burnout: Identifying signs of burnout and how it can worsen during winter months.
    2. Building Boundaries: Setting boundaries between work and personal life, especially when working from home or handling increased workloads.
    3. Self-Care Routines: Practical self-care tips for busy educators, including taking time off, practicing relaxation techniques, and engaging in hobbies.
  • Activity: Self-Care Reflection (10 minutes)
    • Participants write down 2-3 self-care practices that they can integrate into their daily routines. Examples could include taking walks, reading for 10 minutes, or scheduling "me time."
  • Interactive Task: Creating a Winter Self-Care Plan (10 minutes)
    • Participants will create a brief self-care plan for the winter months, addressing physical, mental, and emotional health needs.
  • Closing Activity: Group Discussion & Sharing (10 minutes)
    • Participants share their action plans and self-care practices with the group for mutual support and accountability.

Conclusion & Wrap-up (10 minutes)
  • Recap Key Points:
    • Mental health strategies, physical health maintenance, and self-care are essential to thriving during winter.
  • Feedback: A short survey or open-floor discussion for feedback on the course and how it can be improved.
  • Resources for Further Support:
    • Provide a list of online resources, apps for mental health, local support services, and winter wellness blogs for continued learning.

  • PowerPoint presentation or handouts (slides summarizing key points)
  • A quiet space for mindfulness activity
  • Yoga mats or space for stretching activities
